A Day in the Life of a Support Worker |
|
7.00 am - 7.45 am Visit to Margaret Margaret is an 84 year old lady who lives in sheltered accomodation. Last year she suffered a stroke that has reduced her mobility and affected her speech. Each morning a Support Worker helps Margaret to wash and dress, have some breakfast and take her daily medicines. Margaret likes to chat so staff have to be patient and give her time to get her words out, this is a very important part of the visit. 8.00 am - 8.15 am Visit to Ted Ted is a 75 year old Gentleman who lives alone. He has severe rheumatoid arthritis and requires several short visits each day to help with awkward tasks such as opening food packets, putting on socks and opening his post. 8.30 am - 9.30 am Visit to Mabel and Arthur Mabel and Arthur have been married for nearly 70 years. They remain in the family home where they raised their family who have all moved away. Each day we do some light housework, collect prescriptions and organise the shopping from the local supermarket. 10.00 am - 11.30 am Visit to Katherine - 2 Staff Katherine, 78, suffered a stoke 2 years ago and lost the use of both legs and one arm. She is wonderfully positive in spite of her disability and can still tell a really good joke to those of us patient enough to give her time to speak. Two staff visit Katherine as she has to be helped out of bed with a mechanical hoist. After her morning shower, Katherine will sit out in her chair, have breakfast and watch some daytime television. Later in the day our Support Workers will return to help her with lunch and then again in the evening. 12.00 noon - 1.00 pm Visit to Helen Helen is 96 yet fully independent and living in her own home. Helen enjoys a lunchtime visit from us which she sees as her ‘bit of pampering’. Each day a Support Worker will set Helens tray with her best china and crystal and set about preparing a delicious meal, just the way she likes it! Whilst lunch is cooking, Helen likes a chilled glass of wine and a few nuts and nibbles, as well as an update on the latest news from our staff. Before leaving Helen, we top up the nuts in the bird feeder as she loves to watch the birds and then tell us all about it! 7.00 pm - 9.00 pm Evening visit to Mr and Mrs Lawler ( twice weekly ) Mrs Lawler lives with her disabled husband and is his primary carer. By 7.00 pm Mr Lawler is settled for the evening and Mrs Lawler goes to visit her friend for a game of Bridge or just a relaxing glass of Sherry.A Support Worker waits at the house in case Mr Lawler requires any assistance in his wife’s absence. These are just a few examples of the work we do. We support many people to remain as independant as possible and it is a great privilege to do so. The work is highly rewarding and very varied, the clients are delightful and highly valued by us and our staff team is the best! We look forward to hearing from you! |
